Black Christmas movie review

This festive fright-fest was a nice surprise from what I was originally expecting. This is another horror remake (from the people behind ‘Final Destination’ – great film), but un-like so many others; it did manage to come up trumps; such as ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.’ This is a remake of Bob Clarke’s 1974 classic slasher movie, ‘Black Christmas’; which actually came four years before John Carpenter’s ‘Halloween’. Some fans lay claim that it was the original slasher flick.

From the outside, this looks like just another of your basic ‘there’s a psycho hacking up a bunch of pretty girls, who are running up the stairs instead of out of the door,’ and to a certain extent that’s correct, it’s the way this is conveyed which is interesting and enticing to watch.

The story: crazed killer, Billy Lenz, escapes his psychiatric ward and is determined to make it to his childhood home, where he was abused, by Christmas. Problem is, it’s years later and the home is now a Sorority house. It’s Christmas Eve and a who’s who of teen/horror girl stars are there to welcome him, including Melissa (Michelle Trachtenberg , ‘Buffy the vampire slayer’ fame), Heather (Mary Elizabeth Winstead, ‘Final Destination 3’), Dana (Lacey Chabert, ‘Mean Girls’) and Kelli (Katie Cassidy, ‘When a stranger calls’ remake.)

This movie is actually pretty good, it has a constant feeling of being watched that runs right through it and adds a sparkle to the scares, and the tension is kept high. The actresses, although spouting some awful lines at times, also say some good ones. The acting is good, and because most of the leading ladies are stars, and most of them horror stars, the audience doesn’t guess which one is going to make it to the rolling credits. The story-line builds well, and there is a mounting tension, as the killer first phones the girls, and then starts to do away with them.

A similar storyline to the original ‘Halloween’, with a killer coming home for the holidays, there are also many similar P.O.V shots of the killer, watching the girls throughout the house. The Christmas theme bleeds in nicely with the plot, and it comes across in places (especially, the flash-backs to Billy Lenz’s childhood) like something, director, Tim Burton, would dream up. The film gets darker and darker as we move through it, with some very violent scenes, and the music by Shirley Walker is great; capturing horror and Christmas all in one twisted melody. Also, the use of red and green lighting throughout (owed to Christmas) is very cool, and creates a great atmosphere.

Due to it being set in a Sorority house, and this no longer being 1974, some of the dialogue just doesn’t cut it. I can’t imagine many of these girls’ staying in the house with a crazed serial killer, just because they can’t find their ‘sorority sister,’ believable in 2007 – sad, but true. There is, unfortunately, the obligatory shower scene, but it’s used for scares, not thrills, and so works.

Right from the start you can tell, this isn’t your usual run of the mill slasher, it actually has a back story, and we do find ourselves caring for some of the characters, for example, Kelli, played by Katie Cassidy is great; plus if you hated ‘Dawn’ in ‘Buffy the vampire slayer’ – you are gonna love this movie.

But as far as we can tell, Williams isn’t adding this to his Monday Night Football schedule and we couldn’t find the pre-game party anyway.

But that doesn’t mean the show’s not going to go on. Anything but. Tonight and tomorrow morning are the peak viewing times of the Orionid meteor shower.

Monitor colleague Pete Spotts suggests you don’t go to sleep tonight. Or if you do, do it now and set your alarm for 1 a.m. because that’s when — as Deoin Sanders would say — it’s “prime time.” (By the way, the 1 a.m. schedule is good no matter what time zone you live in, which makes it convenient to remember).

The viewing should be good until dawn. Right before sunrise could even be the best time to view.

We have only known for a few weeks that the Verizon Motorola Droid was coming, but we did not know the release date of the handset. We can finally tell you that the date looks to be October 30, and the hype surrounding the phone has certainly caused a stir.

The Inquisitr came up with this date by visiting the DroidDoes website, there is code on the site, once decoded the date is October 30. Verizon always seems to be bitter about not getting the iPhone, which has lead them to a number of not so subtle attacks on the Apple iPhone.

One ad was explaining how they have 5 times more coverage than AT&T; the most recent was their Verizon Droid Does Commercial. This ad was a dig at the iPhone, highlighting all the features that are lacking with the smartphone, while saying that the new Verizon/ Motorola Droid will come with all those features.

The Motorola Droid is just the latest handset to claim that it will be an iPhone killer, but for once, it could actually be true. Verizon is the preferred network carrier in the US, but they have never had a good smartphone to offer its customers, the Motorola Droid is a handset that Verizon users have been crying out for. The only one drawback that we can see with this latest Google Android handset is that it will not have the best App Store, which as we know Apple have.

As many as six businesses in the mall were destroyed by the fire.
"This is a real tragedy for the property owner and businesses in the building," said Pinkham.

The mall is located on the south side of East Elkhorn Avenue, the main street through the town.

The Estes Park volunteer fire department was aided by firefighters from Loveland, Fort Collins, Allenspark and several rural fire departments.

As of 10:15 a.m., the roof of the mall had collapsed, although walls of the mall, described as being relatively small, were still standing, said Pinkham.

Fox 31 is reporting that the fire started in the attic above a Christmas shop.

9News cites an Estes Park News reporter in describing the gravity of the fire:

"It's still really bad, there's huge flames still coming out of the Park Theatre Mall historic building, the flames have reached the front of the Park Theatre Mall building, which is on the Elkhorn side, which is our very downtown," Kris Hazleton of the Estes Park News said around 9 a.m. "So the fear is there since the wind's picked up, the fire is going to spread to different buildings in the downtown area."

Dante Wesley Hit on Clifton Smith Video

Buccaneers return man Clifton Smith was left with a concussion after Carolina's Dante Wesley delivered a devastating late-second-quarter hit on him at yesterday's Carolina Panthers vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers game.

The video shows Dante Wesley launching himself into Smith before the ball even arrived. Smith was knocked unconscious for nearly a minute. He missed the rest of the game and it was announced that he had a concussion.

Wesley was called for an interference penalty and a personal foul and was ejected. He may face a suspension.

Two-time London Marathon winner Irina Mikitenko of Germany makes a return to the top rung Marathon circuit in Chicago this Sunday after missing out on the IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Berlin in August.

The two fastest women who entered for the 2009 Chicago Marathon, to be held on 11 October, Kazakhstan-born Irina Mikitenko and Athens Olympic bronze medalist and 2006 Chicago champion Deena Kastor of the USA are both recovering from losses. Kastor from a broken foot at the Beijing Olympic Games and Mikitenko from the death of her father earlier this year.

Mikitenko has already announced that she would leave no stones unturned in her bid to win the Chicago Marathon as a tribute to her father.

Mikitenko, 37, is the defending World Marathon Majors champion, having won the 2007-2008 series and sits atop the current (2008-2009) leader board, a win in Chicago will cement her claim for the title once again.

The World Marathon Majors is a series of five of the most prestigious races held around the world that includes - Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York City Marathons.

Last minute entrant Ethiopia's Berhane Adere, the 2006/2007 Chicago women's champion, also has hopes to come back from below par performances in the past two years and re-establish herself as one of the top female marathoners.

With defending champion Lidia Grigoryeva of Russia also in fray, the women's race is set to be a battle of the champions.

The organisers are hoping for a new course record in the men's race with Beijing Olympic champion Samuel Wanjiru, Morocco's Abderrahim Goumri and Kenya's Vincent Kipruto all claiming that they are ready to have a go at Haile Gebrselassie's world record mark of 2:03:59. All the three boast of a personal best in the vicinity of 2:05.00s

Pre-race forecast is for typical October day in Chicago with temperatures hovering around 4 to 9 degree centigrade, the conditions are ideal for the champions to go for the world record.

Next, different nitrifying bacteria will turn the nitrites into nitrates, which are even less toxic to the fish and other aquarium life. The nitrates are collected and minimized by filters; however they will eventually accumulate in the tank. Regular water changes are required to remove the nitrates from the water.

It is important to set up and run an aquarium before any fish are introduced into the environment. Wash the tank and any substrate and decorations thoroughly with water. Don't use any soap. Fill the tank with de-chlorinated water and attach filters and lighting. Allow the tank to cycle until the water is no longer cloudy and sufficient P.H and water temperatures have been established.
